How much is airport parking? Real prices by the hour, day and week

At the airports we track, the airport's own parking costs $8 to $39 a day at the posted daily maximum, from Basic Economy Lot at ABQ to Garage A at PVD. At each airport the economy lot is the cheapest and the garage or valet next to the terminal the most expensive. A week costs from $31.50 at a private lot near ABQ, before its taxes and fees. Here are the real numbers, and how airports turn a rate card into your bill.

How airport parking is priced

Short stays: steps up to a daily maximum

Most airport garages and lots charge in steps — for example a price for the first 30 minutes, another for up to an hour, and so on — until the charge reaches the daily maximum. After that, the rest of that day costs nothing extra.

At ABQ, the first 10 minutes are free at the Parking Garage, Premium Economy Lot and Basic Economy Lot.

Longer stays: 24 hours or calendar days

At SMF and PVD the airport says a day is 24 hours from the time you enter. ABQ, IND and CVG don't say, so our calculator counts 24-hour periods there too. CVG states the 24-hour rule only for online bookings. Where a lot posts short-stay steps, our calculator charges the hours past the last full day by those steps, up to one more daily maximum. Where a lot posts only a daily rate, as every official CVG lot does, each started 24 hours counts as a full day. At SMF, once a stay passes 2 to 3½ hours (depending on the lot), the whole daily maximum is charged.

Example: at SMF Garage 1 (daily maximum $21), parking from 8:00 on Monday to 11:00 on Wednesday — 2 days and 3 hours — comes to $54.

A lot that counts calendar days instead charges a car that arrives late in the evening for that date too. None of the lots we track says it does. If a lot says which rule it uses, our calculator follows it; if not, we say what we assumed.

Weekly caps, taxes and fees

None of the lots we track publishes a weekly maximum, so a week costs seven daily maximums. Private operators can add taxes and airport fees on top of the posted rate — when they say so, we show the note next to the price.

Private lots: price by date

5 of the 9 private lots we track don't post a rate our calculator can use: the price depends on your dates, and you see it in an online quote.

How to pay less

  • Compare the total, not the daily rate. For a short trip the hourly steps matter more than the daily maximum; for a long trip, the daily rate and any weekly cap matter most. Our calculator works out the total for your times.
  • Economy lots instead of the garage. At every airport above, the economy lot costs less per day than the garage; the trade-off is a shuttle ride or a longer walk.
  • Check off-airport lots for long trips and compare their quote for your dates with the airport's own economy price, including any taxes and fees.
  • Picking someone up? Wait in the free cell phone lot instead of paying for the garage.
